Welcome to our monthly hop blog called the Squirrels Gone Nutz. If you are new to it, each month we have to make a project with supplies we don’t use enough. There is a theme and/or a technique and type of supply. This month it’s “Christmas in July” and “Acetate”.

So welcome to the new hoppers and for my regular viewers, thank you for stopping by today!

If you are hopping you should come from the blog of the super talented Anna and after me, I invite you to hop to the blog of Marie and her adorable projects.

For this month theme, I quickly thought about this cute dragon decorating a palm tree I never had the chance to use. And I like to try new thing for the hop so I decided to try to make a box card. I also found the perfect companions for this cute dragons. They are supposed to play in the snow but it was easy to turn snow to sand.

So first, I printed the dragon with the palm tree on my Xpress-it blending card. I colored it and the main scene with my markers. I cut a rectangle.

After that, I printed the two other dragons and colored them. I used two slimline border dies to cut around them. So, I had two strips with my dragons.

After that, I started to make my box.

I made you a plan with the measurement and took photos :

First, I glued the side parts onto the main rectangle.

Then, I glued the front part onto the side parts.

As you can see, it can fold flat to fit in an envelope.

After that, I matted and layered my colored panel with a bigger blue rectangle. I also cut and glued a piece of my kraft cardstock on the bottom. This part won’t be visible but it makes a cleaner finish when you see the card from different angles. I did the same with my two strips with the other dragons.

Then, I glued my panel on the base of my card.

I also glued the two stripes on the base making sure the card was still able to fold.

After that, I cut blue pieces fitting the front and the sides of the cards. I also cut the same pieces into pattern acetate ( you thought I forgot the acetate, didn’t you ? ).

Finally, I used my We R Memory Keeper words punch to write my sentiement into kraft cardstock. I glued it with foam pad on the front of my card;

Et voilà !

May the craft be with you !

  1. Hahaha! I love both your card and the “you thought I forgot…” part! I literally giggled out loud and both dogs looked at me like I lost my marbles. 😄 There are so many fun details in this scenic box card! Once again, your coloring is amazing and you really excel at creating critter scenes. And what a great way to include the acetate! Now I’m curious… did you immediately know you wanted to use that patterned acetate and worked the rest of the card around it? Or did you start with the images and have to find a way to work acetate in? I’m always curious about how others start with their projects! Either way, you rocked this one Lounon, but I’ve come to expect that from you!!!

    1. Thank you so much Karen ! At first, I didn’t plan to color the background with my markers but I wanted to do some ink blending. So, I thought I would color the dragons with my markers, fussy cut them and use clear acetate to attached them to the strips of the box card. But with all the details on the images, I came to the conclusion that he would be better (and more time consuming :p) if I color the background too. At this point , I realized I just lost my acetate part ! Happily, after that, I had the idea of the acetate pattern. I am glad I find a lucky escape :p

      1. Thanks for sharing your process. That sounds totally like me to design a whole card, have the plan change, and then have to work hard to get the required element in. I sometimes design a card I love only to realize I left no room for a sentiment. 🙄

  2. Beautiful!!! Love, love ,love this! I totally appreciate the diagram with measurements for us people over here not using the metric system…lol! This box card is amazing…I had actually been thinking of trying to make one of these for this month, but I chickened out. Mine would have paled in comparison anyway!

  3. What a great card, Lounon! These dragons are adorable and I love how you changed the snow to sand! And what a fun idea to make a box card (thanks for the tutorial). I was wondering where comes the acetate 😀
